This is a great remodel project demonstrating what can be done with a small, existing house in an established neighborhood. The very high energy efficiency goals are elegantly balanced with the desire to keep the house small and well-suited to the neighborhood. Maximizing the use of the small space available and balancing health, safety, comfort, function, aesthetics, energy conservation, and value for money make this a really interesting project. This is an excellent example of what can be done with an existing small house including upgraded insulation and air-sealing, 98% furnace and on-demand water heating, and Heat Recovery Ventilation (all supplied and installed by Montana Energy Services). All of the existing R0.5 windows are to be replaced with new, R5, fiberglass windows manufactured by SeriousWindows and supplied by Energetechs, Inc.  The General Contractor, Lentz Construction, of Missoula is going to great lengths to reuse as much of the existing home as possible and is also using reclaimed materials where possible.

Sun Study on Tom and Linda's Passive House project in Missoula, MontanaTom and Linda’s Passive House, Missoula, Montana

“Passive House” is THE most stringent energy efficiency standard in the world and Tom and Linda Hellem are building one here in Missoula, Montana. This project was designed using an Integrated Design Approach that included the Owners/Contractor, Lucas Dupuis of Sustainable Building Design, and the Energy Experts from our sister company, Energetechs, in Missoula. It will incorporate super energy efficiency goals as well as maximizing the use of both the lot (an infill lot close to existing services) and the small space in the house. Eventually their plans call for building two of these houses on the available land but for now they are starting with their own house and trying to make it as affordable, comfortable, durable, and energy efficient as they possibly can. This project incorporates Passive solar Design with almost unbelievable levels of insulation and air-tightness to be provided by Energetechs. To the point where the main heating system for the house will be a small, electric heater in the ducting for the extremely efficient Energy Recovery Ventilator, also to be installed by Energetechs.

Energy efficient, new, green home in Missoula, Montana

Hess Family Home, Missoula, Montana

This is a new home under construction in Missoula’s Rattlesnake Valley. An extensive integrated design process that included the owner/contractor (Erik Hess of Hess Construction), architect (Tony Moretti), energy consultant (Energetechs), and various trade partners (including Energetechs and Clawson Windows) for this project has resulted in a great design with a strong emphasis on energy conservation. This is combined with goals of resource allocation, aesthetics, function, comfort, budget, and a healthy lifestyle to create a one-of-a-kind, custom, new home for this Missoula family of five. The home features double-stud wall construction, extensive air-sealing measures (by Energetechs), recycled cellulose blown-in insulation(MES), ICF foundations, super-efficient furnace and water heater (MES), Heat Recovery Ventilation (MES), locally-made triple-glazed windows, reclaimed lumber, and sustainably-harvested wood products.
